Have Fun While Helping the Environment!

Audubon Nature Festival

August 28, 2022

By Lauren Choy

Envirofun members helped out at the Audubon Society's nature festival at Magazine Park in Cambridge, Massachusetts in August, proving that helping the environment can be fun! Kids danced to the tunes of a reggae band and created artwork using recyclable materials. Other kids explored the math trail located on the park’s footbridge, sponsored by Math Talk,

which combines colorful

public art in a natural setting with

the Measure! Everything! App

to introduce early math concepts

to children. The festival also

highlighted an innovative floating

wetlands project that helps

preserve the Charles River's vital

natural habitat.

Support the environment!

There are many ways that you, too,

can help support environmental

efforts in your town! Events like the Audubon Nature Festival happen in many places and more often than you would think. Simply google, “Nature event near me” or look for your local Audubon society’s website (www.audubon.org). For those who live near Magazine Beach in Cambridge, check out their website  (https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/magazine-beach) for upcoming events. Or, if none of this works, no worries! You can also feel free to reach out to Christine and I at Envirofun, and we would be happy to connect you with environmental efforts in your area!

Pier 5 Earth Day Celebration

April 23, 2022

By Christine Maher

This past April, Envirofun members in Boston, Massachusetts

helped organize an Earth Day celebration for kids!  Kids

came to enjoy Earth Day festivities, including Bruce the

Bubbleman, guitar music and art projects in support of

plans to transform an abandoned pier into new green

space for the city. From playgrounds to splash ponds,

kids contributed their ideas for a new park through

drawings and note cards, while enjoying free ice cream.

Sponsored by the Pier 5 Association in the Boston

neighborhood of Charlestown, the goal of the

celebration was to help build support and funding for

the creation of additional urban green space. Through

projects such as these, cities can help preserve native

habitat, reduce pollution and urban “hot spots,”

and most importantly, provide all city residents

with a peaceful oasis to relax and enjoy nature.

You can look for ways to increase green space in your town!

Start with the Nature Conservancy to see if there are any volunteer opportunities in your area:

Or contribute to the Conservancy's "Plant a Billion Trees Campaign!"

Mattapan Tree Giveaway

December 2, 2021

By Christine Maher

This past October, the non-profit organization, Speak for the Trees, in Boston, Massachusetts hosted a tree giveaway! Trees create healthier city environments by reducing urban “hot spots,” lowering energy costs and cleaning the air. But the best part of the giveaway was the recipients’ reactions.  One family brought along their 8-year-old son, who was noticeably excited to plant and take care of his new tree. After bringing his tree to his family’s car, the little boy returned to ask, “Can I get another one?” This process continued until the family’s car was full – they left with 5 trees!

Many cities have free tree planting services or “Adopt a Tree” programs where you can take charge of caring for a specific tree in your neighborhood. Not only does planting trees create healthier cities, they promote environmental justice, which is when all residents of a city have equal access to a safe and healthy natural environment.

Your City May Have a Free Tree Program!

We searched online (under “Your City’s Name Tree Planting”) and found a number of similar programs.  Here are just a few:
